Academic Integrity as a Public Good

Academic integrity is crucial not only for safeguarding the integrity of knowledge creation and dissemination, but also for establishing the public trust that society needs to operate.

The theme of the 8th Asia Pacific Conference on Educational Integrity – Academic Integrity as a Public Good – emphasises academic integrity as a society-wide issue with a strong influence on ethical practices within disciplines, professions, industry and business, government and public institutions. Accordingly, the conference program is being developed to initiate a wide-ranging conversation about the importance of academic integrity from multiple perspectives from within and without the academy and higher education institutions. Importantly, this includes the perspective of students themselves.

This conference will be of interest to academic language and learning educators, academic developers, students, faculty academics, professional staff, and policy developers and implementers.

Asia Pacific Forum on Educational Integrity

The Asia Pacific Forum on Educational Integrity (APFEI) is a multi-institutional, cross-disciplinary and non-profit organisation that fosters research and collaboration on issues relating to educational and academic integrity. Currently based in Australia, APFEI aims to provide a platform for the discussion, investigation and promotion of ethical research and writing practices by students, teaching staff, educational and learning developers, librarians, academic misconduct officers and policy professionals. Overall, APFEI is dedicated to the promotion of education about academic integrity as well as the more effective minimisation and management of academic misconduct.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

In addition to keynote addresses and plenary panel discussions with representatives from within and outside the higher education sector, the program is being designed to provide opportunities for interaction in a variety of formats.

Proposals on any topic related to Educational Integrity are welcome, but we particularly invite proposals on:

  • Connections between educational integrity, professional integrity, public trust and/or community engagement
  • Educational integrity in online and transnational education
  • Educational integrity regulation, legislation and quality assurance
  • Educational technologies vs technological temptations
  • Capacity building – supporting students to engage with educational integrity
  • Building and maintaining a culture of educational integrity in the University

Presentation formats

  • Paper presentations (20 minutes)
  • Posters (for lunchtime showcase)
  • Hot topic conversation-starters (5 minutes)
  • Workshops (60 minutes)
  • Themed sessions involving panels, papers or other discussion formats curated by the proposer (90 minutes).

Abstracts for papers, posters and hot-topics conversation starters should be limited to 400 words.

Proposals for workshops and themed sessions should be limited to 1,000 words.

Multiple proposals are welcome, but are limited to one per person per category.

Registration Details

Please note the following:

  • Where a paper is co-authored, at least one author must register for the conference for the paper to be accepted.
  • Delegates who select student concession or APFEI member rates will be required to provide evidence of their status at the conference.
  • A non-refundable 10% goods and services tax (GST) will be applied to your registration at the time of payment.
  • Payment by Visa or MasterCard is required.
  • Registration for the conference dinner will be managed separately.

Cancellation of Registration

Notification of cancellation must be made in writing to pyramidically.

The following cancellation fees will apply:

  • A fee of 10% of the registration fee will apply for registrations cancelled between 17 July 2017 and 2 October 2017 (inclusive).
  • A fee of 50% of the registration fee will apply for registrations cancelled between 3 October 2017 and 25 October 2017 (inclusive).
  • No refunds will be issued for registrations cancelled from 26 October 2017.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Lisa Bero, The University of Sydney, Australia

Chair, Medicines Use and Health Outcomes. Faculty of Pharmacy and Charles Perkins Centre

Professor Lisa Bero is a pharmacologist and researcher in evidence-based health care who is internationally renowned for her studies on the integrity of clinical and basic research evidence that is used to influence health policy, and the manner in which evidence is communicated to key groups such as physicians, policy-makers, journalists and the community. She leads the Bias and Research Integrity Node at the Charles Perkins Centre. Prior to joining the University of Sydney in 2014, she was Professor at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Institute for Health Policy Studies, University of California San Francisco (UCSF). Lisa is recognised for her methodological studies on bias (including publication/reporting, design and funding biases) in the fields of clinical medicine (pharmaceuticals), tobacco control and environmental research, and on the use and implications of the evidence for prescribing decisions/policy.

Her expertise lies in investigating hidden biases in the design, conduct and publication of research, and includes ground-breaking work that demonstrated the selective reporting of data for drugs approved by the FDA (PLoS Medicine2008) and a paper (BMJ2012) which showed that including unpublished outcomes of drug studies in meta-analyses changes the results of all relevant meta-analyses. These findings have contributed to open access data reforms such as access to information from drug regulatory agencies and improved reporting requirements for clinical trials on the clinicaltrials.gov registry. Additionally her interest in evidence-based policy led to work examining influences on the production and dissemination of science.

Dr Tricia Bertram Gallant, University of California San Diego, US

Director, Academic Integrity Office

Dr Tricia Bertram Gallant, Ph.D., has been an ethics lecturer with the Rady School of Management (UC San Diego) and currently serves as the Director of the Academic Integrity Office (UC, San Diego) and Transitions Committee Co-Chair for the International Center for Academic Integrity. She has published widely on the issue of academic integrity in the Journal of Higher Education, the Review of Higher Education, the Journal of Library Administration, NASPA, Science & Engineering Ethics, and the Canadian Journal of Higher Education. She is author of 7708292768 (Wiley’s Jossey-Bass, 2008); editor of Creating the Ethical Academy: A Systems Approach to Understanding Misconduct & Empowering Change in Higher Education (Routledge, 2011); and section editor for the 2265834491 (Springer, 2016).

Tricia consults with schools, colleges and universities in the United States, Jamaica, Egypt, Singapore, Australia and the United Kingdom on a range of related issues, including: developing academic integrity policies and procedures; working with stakeholders (from students, to faculty to administrators) to create cultures of integrity; inspiring campus interest in and commitment to addressing integrity and ethics; managing a centralised office for academic misconduct complaints; advising faculty on creating the ethical classroom and teaching ethical decision-making; revamping online and face-to-face classrooms to reduce cheating and enhance integrity; and teaching students about academic integrity, professional ethics, and ethical decision-making.

Panelists: Regulation, Quality Assurance, and Institutional Contexts

Dr Michael Tomlinson, FGIA, FCIS

Director, Assurance Group, Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA) Australia

Dr Michael Tomlinson is Director of the Assurance Group at TEQSA. He leads case teams to organise and conduct assessments of over 120 providers of higher education (including all of Australia’s universities) against Australia’s Higher Education Threshold Standards. He is also leading the implementation of the Higher Education Standards Framework (2015) for TEQSA and TEQSA’s role in implementing the recommendations of the Admissions Transparency Report.

Before coming to TEQSA, Michael was an Audit Director at the former Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), and for twenty years worked in Australian universities, for the last fifteen of these in senior positions at Swinburne University of Technology.

Michael is a Fellow of the Governance Institute of Australia and of the International Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators. He has been an expert panel member for a number of provider reviews for the national accreditation agency in Timor Leste.

Chris Whelan

Executive Director, Universities New Zealand

Chris Whelan is the Executive Director of Universities New Zealand –Te Pōkai Tara, the representative body for New Zealand’s eight universities. The goal of Universities New Zealand is to enhance the quality of our universities and their contribution – locally and nationally, to New Zealand’s social and economic growth.

Chris has significant management experience in the private, public and university sectors.  Before joining Universities New Zealand in January 2014, he spent three years at the University of Canterbury.  There he led a programme focused on the university’s recovery and transformation following the earthquakes. Prior to that he held strategic management and corporate services positions with the New Zealand Police, the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID), and Shell Oil.

Chris holds an MA (Hons) in History from the University of Canterbury and an MBA from Victoria University of Wellington. Chris is a classically trained singer and his interests include history, wine, food, golf and travel.

Panelists: Contract Cheating and Educational Technologies

Associate Professor Tracey Bretag, Director

Business School Office of Academic Integrity, University of South Australia

For over a decade, Tracey’s research has focussed on all aspects of academic integrity. Since 2011 she has led four large Australian Office for Learning and Teaching funded research projects, and is currently co-leading (with Rowena Harper) the OLT project Contract cheating and assessment design: Exploring the connection. This project has included the largest survey to date of students and teaching staff about their attitudes towards, and experiences with contract cheating. Preliminary findings from this project were reported at a symposium at UniSA in April 2017. Tracey is the founding Editor of the International Journal for Educational Integrity (SpringerOpen), Editor-in-Chief of the Handbook of Academic Integrity (Springer 2016), former Chair of the Asia-Pacific Forum on Educational Integrity, and Immediate Past President of the Executive Board to the International Center for Academic Integrity in the U.S.

Associate Professor Phillip (Phill) Dawson, Associate Director

Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), Deakin University

Associate Professor Phillip (Phill) Dawson holds degrees in education, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. He leads 509-861-9309 research agenda on academic integrity, with a focus on experimental studies and new technologies. His recent paper Five ways to hack and cheat with bring-your-own-device electronic examinations (British Journal of Educational Technology, 2016)is amongst the first published research on exam hacking. He is currently engaged in empirical research into marker accuracy at detecting contract cheating. Phill’s academic integrity research is part of his broader research agenda in improving university assessment practices, ranging from macro-level matters like assessment design to micro-level topics like rubrics.

Dr Christine Slade, PhD GC Prof Learning SFHEA

Institute for Teaching and Learning Innovation (ITaLI), The University of Queensland

Dr Christine Slade is a Lecturer in Higher Education, with a specialisation in assessment. In February 2017, as the leader of a grant from APFEI examining contract cheating, Christine asked staff experienced in assessment design to participate in developing a collection of high-stakes assessment examples (other than exams) that demonstrate ways to strengthen the verification of student identity in undertaking these tasks. Fifteen universities were represented across the two workshops. Since then, Christine and her colleague, Associate Professor Susan Rowland, have run several other workshops, including at the University of Technology Sydney and the Queensland University of Technology. In July 2016, she was first author on the issues paper ‘Addressing Student Dishonesty in Assessment’ (Slade, Rowland & McGrath) requested by the UQ’s Assessment Sub-Committee. Before taking up this role at UQ in early 2016, she was responsible for the implementation of ePortfolios at the University of the Sunshine Coast. In 2015, she was a recipient of a prestigious national Platinum LearnX Impact Award in recognition of this work and also received a commendation for excellence in innovation in the 2015 ATEM/Campus Review Best Practice Awards.

Rebecca Awdry

Manager of Academic Quality and Development Teaching and Learning, University of Canberra

Rebecca Awdry is the Manager of Academic Quality at the University of Canberra. Her primary role has the responsibility of supporting strategic projects which look to improve academic quality, student engagement and retention through improved curriculum design, policies and processes. Rebecca is undertaking a PhD on the topic of contract cheating in Higher Education. The study will investigate prevalence of contract cheating globally; consider the extent, range and ownership of the essay mills and associated sites; and explore the reasons why contract cheating may have seen a rise in recent years, and how this may relate to the delivery and objectives of education today.

James Thorley

Turnitin (Asia Pacific)

Coming from a family background of education, James always assumed that he would become a teacher. After University, he planned initially to teach English abroad, but as a stop-gap, he decided to take a sales job while he could get everything in order. That job was at Turnitin, and 12 years later he is still here! James started working in the UK market, followed by Europe, and then later Middle East, Africa and Asia. During this time, he built up considerable sales and management experience in leading teams, as well as strong technology, education and cross-cultural knowledge. In late 2015, he was fortunate to be offered the opportunity to move to Australia, to establish and run the new office in Melbourne. Over the past 2 years the team in Melbourne has grown to 12 people serving customers in Australia, New Zealand and the wider APAC region.
